Book the whole cabin for the two of you.

Most people book Inkwood Reserve for a group of eight. You do not have to. The cabin has four themed bedrooms and two baths, and when you reserve the whole place, all of it is yours — pick a different room each night if you want, or keep the biggest one and let the rest sit empty.

Every bed uses a Helix mattress, so wherever you land, you sleep well. The point of taking the entire cabin for two is simple: total privacy. Five wooded acres, no shared walls, no one arriving after you. You can leave the towels where they fall and the coffee cups on the patio.

There is a full kitchen, a grill, and a smart TV, and enough room that neither of you is ever in the other's way. It is the whole house, run at the pace of a couple rather than a crowd.

Evenings are the reason to come in winter. Start in the sauna and let the cold outside stop mattering. Move to the hot tub under whatever the sky is doing — clear, snowing, dark and full of stars. There is an outdoor shower for the space between the two.

When you are ready to sit, there are two fire pits: a propane pit with seating for eight, and a wood-burning pit that seats four and smells like a real fire should. For the two of you, either one is oversized in the best way. Bring something to drink out to the patio and let the acres stay quiet around you.

Nobody is going to knock. Nobody is parked next door. This is the part of the trip guests remember — the hours after dark, outside, with heat at your back and the woods holding still. Pour a second drink; you are not driving anywhere.

Mornings here have no schedule. Make coffee in the full kitchen and take it to the patio, or back to the hot tub if last night was not enough. When you want to move, the lake is about a five-minute walk down through the trees, where a private dock and two kayaks wait for you — lake access, so you walk to the water and have it mostly to yourselves.

Paddle out, or just sit on the dock. Cook a long breakfast on the grill or the stove; there is no checkout rush built into the day. The dogs are welcome too — up to two of them, and the property is not fenced, so keep an eye on them near the water and the road.

Slow is the whole idea. You came two hours to stop hurrying, and the cabin is built to let you.

Inkwood Reserve sits about two hours and roughly 115 miles from New York City, which is the sweet spot for a weekend: far enough that it feels like leaving, close enough that you are not spending the trip in the car. Livingston Manor and the western Catskills are nearby for a dinner out, a drive, or a supply run, but the cabin gives you every reason to stay put.

Come for an anniversary, a birthday, or Valentine's — the winter dates, when the hot tub and the fire earn their keep, are the ones worth planning around. Leave the city after work on Friday and be in the sauna before the evening is over.

What you get for the drive is real distance: five private acres, no visible neighbors, and a quiet you can actually hear. Two hours out, and a different week entirely.
